چکیده
Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a rare, aggressive tumor, with a special predilection for the upper bronchodigestive tract and oral cavity (1-3), but it may occur in other locations such as the uterus and breast. This tumor has a mixture of carcinoma and sarcoma containing differentiated mesenchymal elements (1-3). Orbital apex syndrome is a rare complex characterized by proptosis and paralysis of extraocular muscles, associated with involvement of the first division of the trigeminal nerve and visual loss (4). The most common diseases responsible for this syndrome can be metastatic tumors, orbital cellulitis (bacterial infection), orbital myositis, and fungal infection (4). To our knowledge, this is the first case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the left ethmoid sinus presenting as orbital apex syndrome. Histologic aspects of this tumor are areas with spindles and epithelial characteristics cells. The tumor cells exp ress vimentin and cytokeratin staining. Immunohistochemistry was used to confirm the diagnosis.

Bilateral Orbital Metastasis of Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma: a Rare Case Report
Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common type of thyroid cancer after papillary carcinoma. It usually grows slowly and is clinically indolent; but rarely, its aggressive forms with distant metastases can occur. We report here an uncommon case of bilateral orbital metastasis of FTC. A 70-year-old woman present...
متن کاملOrbital Apex Metastasis from Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: Acute Loss of Vision and Subsequent Recovery with the Radiation
Orbital apex metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is rare. We present a patient with known metastatic ACC presented with a rapidly declining vision with visual acuity oculus dexter (OD) equal to counting fingers at two feet. On imaging, she was found to have a right orbital apex tumor causing compressive optic neuropathy. She received the intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). ...
متن کاملMetastatic pancreatic carcinoma to the orbital apex presenting as a superior divisional third cranial nerve palsy
Metastatic tumors to the orbit are rare, especially from a primary pancreatic carcinoma. A 59-year-old man presented with 4 weeks of right eye pain and eyelid swelling. There was right upper eyelid ptosis associated with a right supraduction deficit consistent with a superior divisional third cranial nerve (CN III) palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right orbital apex lesion. A right ...
متن کاملSuccessful Treatment of the Traumatic Orbital Apex Syndrome due to Direct Bone Compression.
Orbital apex syndrome is an uncommon but severe ocular complication of craniomaxillofacial fracture. The optimal treatment strategy for this very rare traumatic syndrome has not been well established. We present a case in which traumatic orbital apex syndrome was caused by direct compression from the displaced fracture segments. Visual and extraocular function both improved quickly after emerge...
متن کاملOrbital Apex Syndrome as the Initial Presentation of Metastatic Breast Cancer
Breast cancer metastases to the paranasal sinuses are an infrequent occurrence, and diagnosis is often delayed due to misdiagnosis of headache or sinusitis. We present a case of a 49year-old female with a history of breast cancer status post bilateral mastectomy whose metastatic breast cancer to the paranasal sinuses first manifested as orbital apex syndrome. In the clinical picture of sinusiti...
